ΒΆ1. (SBU) Kristjan Guy Burgess, Political Advisor to the Miister at
the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affars, confirmed to Post that
the Government of Iceand has changed its mind and now intends to
seeka high-level bilateral meeting with the United States on the
margins of the UN General Assembly. Bugess said that the Icelandic
Minister for Foreig Affairs, Ossur Skarphedinsson, would like to
meet with the Secretary to discuss the potential for U.S.-Icelandic
cooperation on energy issues, defense matters and Arctic policy.
The Government of Iceland believes that opportunities exist for
long-term collaboration with the United States in these three areas.
Skarphedinsson's travel plans are not yet firm; however, he will
probably depart New York shortly after he addresses the General
Assembly on September 26.
